PRINCIPLES OF COMPOSING MUSIC
IN AZERBAIJANI MODES IN FOLK STYLE
II. STRUCTURE OF PERFECT QUINTES
Modes, the scales of which form gradual succession of
perfect quintes, are the following: "Shushtar" and "Chargah".
1. Composing of music in the mode "Shushtar"
A. Diapason of the mode scale "Shushtar"
Two equal tetrachords structured by formula 1-1-1/2 and
combined separately (there emerges an interval of increased second between
the fourth degree of the lower and the first degree of the upper tetrachords)
form the scale of the mode "Shushtar".
In this scale the second degree of the upper tetrachord
is a tonic of the mode.
With the tonic la of the first octave the scale of the
mode "Shushtar" can be presented in the following form:
This scale consists of gradual succession of perfect quintes.
B. Modal functions of the degrees and permissible leaps
In the above scale:
1-st
degree of the scale functions as a lower sixth (conversion to the third).
This degree allows a single movement to the lower quarte of the tonic.
2-nd
degree of the scale functions as a supertonic of the lower sixth of
the tonic. This degree allows a single movement to the lower third of
the tonic.
3-rd
degree of the scale has two functions: 1) the function of the lower
quarte of the tonic, and 2) the function of the concluding degrees.
This degree allows leaps to the tonic and to the supertonic of the keynote.
4-th
degree of the scale functions as a supertonic of the lower quarte of
the tonic and as a lower third of the tonic. Leaps from this degree
are allowed: upwards - to the tonic, downwards - to the supertonic of
the lower sixth of the tonic.
5-th
degree of the scale functions as a subtonic of the keynote. Leaps from
this degree are allowed: upwards - to the subtonic of the keynote, downwards
- to the lower quarte of the tonic.
6-th
degree of the scale functions as a tonic of the scale. Leaps from this
degree are allowed to the upper mediant of the tonic, to the lower third
and to the lower quarte.
7-th
degree of the scale functions as a supertonic of the keynote. Leaps
from this degree are allowed to the leading tone and to the lower quarte
of the tonic.
8-th
degree of the scale has a function of the upper mediant of the tonic.
This degree allows a leap down to the tonic.
