PRINCIPLES OF COMPOSING MUSIC
IN AZERBAIJANI MODES IN FOLK STYLE

IV. STRUCTURE OF MAJOR SIXTHS

1. Composing music in the mode "Humayun"

A. Diapason of the mode scale "Humayun"

Two equal tetrachords structured by formula 1/2- 11/2- 1/2 and combined by intermediate tone, form the scale of the mode "Humayun".

There are two tonics in the scale of this mode. The fourth degree of the lower tetrachord forms the 1-st tonic, and the fourth degree of the upper tetrachord forms the 2-nd tonic.

With the tonics do and la of the first octave the scale of the mode "Humayun" is presented in the following way:

B. Modal functions of degrees and permissible leaps

Before speaking about the functions of degrees and the leaps one must know the following:

The conditions to form the melody requires upward octave transition of the lower tetrachord. In this case the scale acquires the following form:

This scale presents an incomplete scale of the two "Shushtars" with tonics la and do.

The scale "Shushtar" with the tonic la lacks two lower degrees, and the scale with the tonic do lacks two upper degrees. If the lacking grades are added from above and from below we shall get the following scale:

If the repetition of the degrees mi and fa are excluded in the above example we shall get the following complicated scale of "Humayun":

Transposition of tonics took place in this example: la took the position of the first tonic, do-the position of the second tonic.

The degrees of this scale are to be regarded as the degrees of the two "Shushtars" scale with the tonics la and do of the first octave.

Everything written in the corresponding chapters about "Shushtar" refers to the mode "Humayun", too.
